The litterary translation is: "don't let tell you, a X is an U". It comes from the Latin Numbers, where X means 10 and U (resp. V, but the Romans did not differentiate between those two letters) means 5. If someone tells you an X is an U, he tries to fool you.

The saying "Don't take any Wooden Nickels" may come from the wooden nickels used at state fairs and centennials. These wooden coins were often used all over town during the fair since everyone knew they could spend them at the fair. During the last few days of the fair people would stop accepting wooden money in town because they might not get a chance to cash them in before the fair ended. In modern times the saying just means that you shouldn't accept any substitutes for "real" money. Other countries and languages have their own sayings about "Fake" money. For this "Language" page we will accept both literal translations and interpretations that are meaningful in other languages.
